President William Ruto’s surprise reshuffle, announced on July 23, saw Duale swapped with Soipan Tuya, leading to speculation about the motivations behind this high-profile change.

The unexpected reassignment came just days after Ruto had originally nominated Duale back to Defence and Tuya to Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry.

Reports suggest that discomfort among top military officials regarding Duale’s assertive leadership style may have prompted the switch.

During his vetting, Duale faced pointed questions from Saboti MP Caleb Amisi, who inquired about whether his leadership style had caused unease within the Defence Ministry.

Duale at the same time also cleared air on reports that the Kenyan military fears him.

“I don’t think the ranks and the leadership of the Kenya Defence Forces fear me. Maybe it is because of my style and i will still take it to the Ministry of Environment,” he said.

Duale denied any such fears, attributing his reputation to his distinctive approach and asserting that he would bring the same vigor to his new role.
