National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula announced the decision on Tuesday, revealing that the Joint Parliamentary Committee granted its endorsement after a rigorous review of Kiricho’s qualifications.

Prior to his appointment, Kanja, 60, served as the commandant of the General Service Unit since 2018.

He was appointed DIG Kenya Police Service in April 2023, will be taking over from Japheth Koome.

Japheth Koome resigned from his position as Inspector General of Police in July, prompting the need for a new appointment. Kiricho’s selection is expected to bring a fresh approach to the role, following Koome’s tenure which included notable reforms and challenges in policing.

The next step involves the presentation of the committee’s report to the National Assembly for further discussion. This deliberation is scheduled for Wednesday morning, where the Assembly will review and confirm the decision.
