For the purposes of this article, any potentially harmful alteration to the liver is referred to as liver disease (also known as a hepatic disease).

Any condition that impairs the liver’s ability to function falls under this umbrella term. If more than 75% of the liver’s tissue is damaged, liver function typically declines.

When these 4 symptoms appear, it’s time to start thinking about your kidneys.

1. Jaundice

Jaundice is the most prevalent sign of a liver problem. Jaundice can cause a person’s skin and eyes to appear yellow, as well as a change in the color of their urine.

When bilirubin levels in the blood rise too high, jaundice sets in. The breakdown of RBCs results in the production of bilirubin, a yellowish pigment. The bilirubin cannot be absorbed or converted to bile by a damaged liver.

2. Fluid Accumulation

Fluid retention is one of the most noticeable signs of liver illness before symptoms appear. Cirrhosis, a condition in which unhealthy liver tissue replaces injured liver tissue, was present in 50% of patients.

Leg swelling and abdominal distension are two common symptoms of fluid retention. This happens either when there is an increase in blood pressure within the veins of the liver, or when the liver is unable to produce albumin, a protein that prevents blood from leaking into the tissue.

3. Loss of blood.

Rectal bleeding, blood in the stool, or blood in the vomit are all symptoms of liver disease. If you don’t have cirrhosis, blood flows smoothly through the liver like a fast-moving car on a smooth freeway.

Thus, the circulatory system attempts to locate alternate routes. Rapid blood flow through swollen veins and on to the spleen, where it can expand and relieve pressure there.

A healthy liver is able to produce clotting proteins, but an unhealthy liver may be unable to. Possible additional bleeding may occur.

4. Difficulty Remembering

Liver disease symptoms include forgetfulness and disorientation. Toxins can reach the brain if the liver can’t process them. Negative reactions can occur, and they can range from simple memory loss to complete disorientation to a coma.

In order to prevent toxins from entering your bloodstream and brain, your doctor may recommend that you take the laxative lactulose.
