Tobias, a father of six, got together with his loved ones on May 25 to celebrate daughter Destiny’s high school graduation. Sadly, the celebration ended in tragedy, with the graduate reportedly holding onto her father’s body, wondering why he was taken from her so soon. Today, his family remembers the doting father and wonders how they will live without him.
It was a joyful celebration.
Destiny had just graduated, so family and friends gathered Thursday at a home in Houston to celebrate the milestone, ABC 13 reported. The party carried on into the wee hours of the morning.
Tobias stayed with Destiny at his ex’s home after his sons and his wife, Neftaly Perez, left for the evening. Witnesses said around 4:15 a.m. Friday, a disagreement erupted between Tobias and 24-year-old Arning about Tobias staying at the party.
The situation escalated, and Tobias ended up dead.
According to the New York Post, Arning is the estranged partner of Destiny’s mother. He was seemingly unhappy that Tobias was at the party, which led to the argument. The Houston Police Department stated in a release that witnesses reported seeing Arning shoot Tobias, who ultimately died on the home’s front steps. He reportedly stayed at the home and was taken into custody by police a short time later and booked, then released, on a $50,000 bond.
He has been charged with murder and was due back in court Tuesday.
Arning has a previous charge from 2021 for unlawfully carrying a weapon in a motor vehicle, ABC 13 reported. According to the news outlet, the charge was dismissed after he completed a pretrial intervention program.
Destiny said Arning was not supposed to be at the party.
The grieving daughter told ABC 13 that her mother’s estranged boyfriend had no business at the home. “He wasn’t supposed to be at my house, and now he’s walking free, and my dad’s gone forever. And he’s walking like nothing ever happened,” she said.
Perez, Destiny’s stepmother, said the teen held onto her father’s “lifeless body.”
“I’m sure she’s never going to get that out of her head,” Perez told the news outlet.
Tobias leaves behind a large family.
In addition to Destiny, Tobias, and Perez shared five young sons who will now have to grow up without their father. According to ABC 13, the pair had been together for 16 years.
“I’m not going to be able to see my best friend, my only friend. I’m not going to hear his voice. I’m not going to get his kisses,” Perez told the news outlet.
She said she never wants Arning to forget what he allegedly did to her and their sons. “I hope it eats you alive what you’ve done, what you’ve taken from us. From our family,” Perez said.
Tobias’ family is mourning the sudden loss.
His niece, Griscelda Saucedo, created a GoFundMe page to assist her family after her uncle’s death. She wrote that everyone adored him, and the loss is devastating.
“My uncle Adam didn’t deserve to have his life end this way, but here we are trying our hardest to pull together as a family and give my uncle a burial he deserves,” the post reads. “My uncle Adam was the life of the party always had a huge smile on his face and always made sure to tell you ‘I love you.’ He never took his life for granted and did everything he could do to provide for his wife and kids.”
“Love you all and are praying for your strength, deeply” one donor wrote.
“No one should die this young. God bless his family and especially his children. Xoxo RIP” another donor commented.
