This decision comes in the wake of tumultuous events that unfolded at the party’s headquarters on July 31 when a group of ruling party supporters forcefully entered the premises, leading to chaotic scenes and confrontations.
The situation took a dramatic turn when Joe Khalende proclaimed himself the new Secretary General, accusing Malala of dereliction of duty. The ensuing standoff at Hustler Plaza on Ngong Road lasted for hours and resulted in Khalende sustaining injuries after being assaulted by unidentified assailants.
In response to these events, the UDA’s top decision-making body convened on August 2 and appointed Hassan Omar Hassan, the party’s deputy leader, as the interim Secretary General.
The National Executive Committee stated that this meeting was called to deliberate on recent occurrences within the party and the broader political landscape in Kenya to chart a path forward.
The party has also announced that upcoming elections will provide members with the opportunity to select their leaders at various levels, ranging from polling stations to national positions.
“The National Executive Committee was convened today at the request of members of the committee to discuss, deliberate and agree on the way forward based on the events of the last few days in the party and fundamentally the events of the last few weeks in our country,” the statement said.
Emphasizing the importance of adapting to the evolving political climate, the UDA stresses the need to regularly update its policies and political direction. The party views this as crucial for aligning with the national landscape and achieving shared objectives.
