Union of Kenya Civil Servants Secretary General Tom Odege told the government to allocate money for salary increments for civil servants as agreed, failure to which the workers will down tools next month.

According to Odege the civil servants expect a salary increase and the government has no option but to abide by the law.

He said the Salary and Remuneration Commission (SRC) has no powers to stop the increment of salaries of civil servants as the matter was agreed in court and can only be overturned by the same court.

“SRC purporting to be deferring a salary increment is unacceptable.”

The SG said the salary increment was budgeted for in the last financial year and therefore cannot be linked to the Finance Bill 2024 that was withdrawn following countrywide protests.

On 18th July 2024 the Salaries and Remuneration Commission SRC announced that the commission will not review civil servants salaries as was planned.

According to SRC Chairperson Lyn Mengich the move was prompted by the existing fiscal constraints and budget cuts emanating from withdrawal of Finance Bill 2024.

“Public service institutions with Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBA) that are impacted by the deferred implementation of salary review in the financial year 2024/2025, are advised to engage the respective trade unions accordingly,” SRC statement reads in part.
