By design, the next AU Chairperson must come from the East African region, which has not held the position since the bloc’s restructuring in 2002. This has led to all the candidates vying for the role from this sub-region.
The East African Community has endorsed Odinga as its preferred candidate for the African Union Commission Chairmanship.
In the AU elections scheduled for February, Odinga will compete against three other candidates:
