This star was a product of the USM Alger development structures. He made his professional debut in 2015 and took of from there. He had also represent Algeria at under 23 and first team level. He was an attacking middlefielder on the rise and he was still relatively young. He was 24 years old when he passed away on Friday evening.

CAF took to social media to extend their condolences to the family, friend and teammates of Billal Benhammouda. This comes a day after he scored and assisted for Algeria in their friendly against DRC. This goes to show how life can change in a matter of a couple of hours. This is one thing that South African football fans are familiar with.

“My son had just been granted a visa, he was going to leave USM Alger and join a club in Europe next season. Now he will join his creator instead.”

His father shared that he had recently secured his VISA and was headed to Europe. This makes it even more tragic considering that he was just getting his career started.

This is tragic for football and Algeria, it is never easy to see a young life being taken away more especially while doing something they love. This should spark a conversation or investigation on what causes footballers to be involved in car accidents. This is something that can be prevented or rather reduced in the future.
