Speaking at the Eldoret State Lodge on Thursday, August 15, when he hosted the Kenya Olympics team for breakfast, Ruto acknowledged that some Kenyans were disappointed after Kipchoge failed to finish the men’s marathon race.

However, Ruto said the former marathon record holder remains a great legend despite his poor performance at the just-concluded Olympics.

“Eliud Kipchoge is a great legend. People we disappointed that he did, people made a lot of comments. How can Eliud not finish the race? But we celebrate you, you are a great legend,” Ruto said.

The president pleaded with Kenyans to avoid criticising athletes, arguing that they sacrificed to make the Kenyan flag fly around the wound.

Although the country has many expectations of the athletes, Ruto said Kenyans must understand their efforts during races.

“Please, people, let us celebrate this, men and women. Let’s criticize them less. They make sacrifices, and they do a lot to make our flag fly in capitals around the world. I know we have set ourselves high standards, but we must be careful when we are successful. We must remind ourselves to thank God and to celebrate,” he added…CONTINUE READING>>
