Beatrice Chebet clinched the other two gold medals in the 5000 and 10000 metres for women. Emanuel Wanyonyi brought home the fourth gold in 800-metre for men.

Ruto awarded each gold medallist KSh 3 million during the celebration of Eldoret as the newest city in Kenya on Thursday, August 15, 2024.

“As we honour these champions, it is better we do it here at Eldored, the newest city in Kenya today. There couldn’t have been a better celebration of Eldored city than to do it with these Olympic champions.

“Your victories are not just medals but symbols of national character and testament to what we can achieve when we believe in ourselves. Congratulations to you all,” said Ruto while presiding over the event at Eldoret State Lodge.

Beatrice Chebet bagged KSh 6 million from the president’s award after winning two gold medals. The head of state awarded silver and bronze medallists KSh 2 million and KSh 1 million each, respectively.

This means Chebet walked away with a whooping KSh 18.9 million after winning an additional 12.9 million from the World Athletics (WA) award.

Chepyegon, who also won a silver medal, walked away with KSh 11.5 million. Wanyonyi pocketed over KSh 9.5 million after taking home KSh 6.5 million each from WA.

World Athletics (WA) introduced prize money, the first ever in Olympic history, for track events at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
