Speaking at a local media today, Milemba, who doubles up as the MP for Emuhaya Constituency, revealed that teachers have been patient enough with their employer Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to fully implement the second phase of 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
“There is a joint strike notice from KNUT and KUPPET for the 26thof August this year. This means that schools will not open because teachers will down their tools,” he said, adding that as a result of the dropping of the Finance Bill 2024, the Appropriation Bill was adopted which saw certain State departments affected in budget cuts, in which teachers were adversely affected.
The announcement comes shortly after Labour Cabinet Secretary (CS) Alfred Mutua met with officials of the National Steering Council of KNUT led by Secretary General Collins Oyuu and National Chairman Patrick Munuhe. The talks were aimed at forestalling a possible strike by teachers as schools reopen for third term.
Among other demands that the teachers have placed include negotiation of a new CBA that the unions say should factor in post-graduate allowances, pre diems for games teachers, and risk allowances for Science teachers.
Also, the teachers demand a special duty and acting allowance for teachers not substantially appointed, promotion of over 130 000 teachers, confirmation of the 46,000 Junior Secondary School (JSS) intern teachers into permanent and pensionable terms, as well as hiring of 20,000 more teachers to plug the staffing challenge in junior schools…CONTINUE READING>>
