The president signed the charter and affixed the government seal, officially conferring city status on Eldoret. The conferment ceremony took place in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, on Thursday, August 15, 2024.

In the presence of other country leaders and Kenyan athletes who participated in the Paris Olympics 2024, Ruto named Eldoret a city sparking joyous reactions from locals.

“President Ruto: I, Kipchirchir William Samoei Ruto, president of the Republic of Kenya and Commander in Chief of Kenya’s Defence Forces do hereby ordain, declare and direct that the municipality of Eldoret has been conferred with city status,” he said.
