In his first interview following his exit, Biden addressed concerns about his health and age, claiming he had “no serious problem” and attributing his lackluster debate performance to illness.

Biden’s decision to withdraw, announced on July 21, stems from fears that an intraparty battle over his candidacy would overshadow the Democrats’ overall campaign.

“We must, we must, we must defeat Trump,” Biden reiterated in a CBS News interview, pledging to fully support Vice-President Kamala Harris as she prepares to lead the ticket.

Reflecting on his initial bid for the presidency in 2020, Biden expressed his intention to be a transitional figure for the next generation.

“When I ran the first time, I thought of myself as being a transition president,” he stated, acknowledging the scrutiny regarding his stamina for another four years in office.

Despite ongoing concerns about his age and capabilities, Biden’s comments suggested he intends to remain an active participant in Harris’s campaign, particularly in states like Pennsylvania, where he has deep roots. He remarked, “I’m going to do whatever Kamala thinks I can do to help most.”

In the interview, Biden revisited the formative moment that motivated his opposition to Trump: the violent far-right rally in Charlottesville in 2017.

He denounced Trump for allegedly emboldening racist groups, stating, “Under his presidency, they came out of those woods with no hoods, knowing they had an ally.”

Looking toward the election, Biden expressed apprehensions regarding a potential lack of peaceful transition, warning that a loss for Trump could lead to violence.
