Up till now, the club and player are yet to decide whether to keep the status quo or go separate ways.
Here are reasons why I feel Barcelona should not renew Ousmane Dembele for the upcoming season:
Ridiculous Demands
His demands from the club have been nothing short of ridiculous amounts. Dembele and his agent Moussa Sissoko demanded Barca pay him a €20 per season as well as a €40mn signing bonus. This is sheer ridiculousness as Dembele isn’t worth close to half of what his agent is asking of the club.
He’s not even among the best players in Europe presently but wants to earn way above the likes of Messi, Haaland, Mane or even Mo Salah.
Faltering Loyalty
He betrayed the club upon all the faith the Catalans have put in him since he joined. Dembele should be loyal to the club for sticking with him all these years and believing he can bounce back.
His medical bills as well as nurturing him to top form this past season. Asking for too much of a salary increase speaks volumes of his personality judging from his history at the club.
There are Better Players Out There
Barcelona should shop for better alternatives than Dembele whose demands would put the club’s financial health in jeopardy in the long run. Barcelona should focus on acquiring players like Raphinha or Di Maria who are way better than the French player.
They should acquire players who are willing to give their hearts for the club, not players who are money-oriented, especially in a time like this when Barca faces financial difficulties.
Recurring Injuries
Dembele’s history with injuries should prompt Barcelona to cut ties with him. He has mostly been a liability for the club since joining the club. He goes from one hospital bed to another every single season.
This week will determine how both parties go about their future together. Barcelona is already considering other options for the 2022/23 season to replace Dembele.
