The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), the union’s sister organization, accepted a similar offer that the union had rejected a fortnight earlier, leading to the latter canceling their strike hours before schools reopened last week.
An order from a higher authority prompted the union to terminate the strike once it became evident that the government would not agree to any new requests.
High-level sources in government circles report that all sides received a directive to end yesterday’s meeting at Teachers Service Commission (TSC) headquarters with an agreement to halt the industrial action. There were no other options, according to sources.
The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has called off its strike, which began on June 26.
KUPPET Secretary General Akelo Misori and Teachers Service Commission (TSC) CEO Nancy Macharia announced that the TSC’s resolution of issues will suspend the strike.
In accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement, Misori announced the reestablishment of medical coverage. He stated that the TSC is attempting to raise funding to promote as many instructors as possible.
In accordance with the court decision, which was issued and is set for review on September 5, the KUPPET decided to suspend the strike. Misori requested that all teachers return to their classrooms while KUPPET attempts to quickly resolve these issues as agreed upon with the commission.
Macharia, for her part, thanked KUPPET for the alternative dispute resolution mechanism to settle labor conflicts.
“After a daylong meeting, we are happy to report to the nation that we have reached an amicable settlement that will enable our teachers to resume duty immediately,” the TSC boss said.
Macharia continued: “The government has implemented all the provisions of the 2021-25 CBA with the teacher unions, specifically the second phase of the CBA, which was due on July 1, 2024.”
