Two people died on Tuesday after allegedly being subjected to mob justice during the anti-government protests in Mlolongo in Machakos County, police have said.

The two are alleged to be among other suspected goons who had infiltrated the Gen Z protests along the Nairobi – Mombasa Highway and its environs, terrorising locals, motorists and pedestrians.

They were then pounced on by the public leading to their deaths.

Athi River East Subcounty Police Commander Anderson Mbae said the deaths were reported to Mlolongo Police Station the same day.

“There were two reported deaths of unknown male adults who were victims of mob justice. They were lynched by demonstrators after they were allegedly found stealing from the public,” Mbae told the Star.

An eye witness told the Star that one of the suspects allegedly hit a resident on the leg using a metal bar.

This was after the latter responded to a distress call from a woman whom he had robbed her mobile phone.

The man together with the woman raised alarm attracting the attention of the public who in turn responded by beating him to death.

Mbae said no cases of injuries inflicted during Tuesday’s demonstrations had been reported to the police by press time.

The police boss said Safaricom’s customer care shop and a bar were among properties vandalised by unknown people masquerading as protesters in Mlolongo town.

“Property of unknown value was looted from the two businesses. We have no any other reported thefts or damages,” Mbae said.
