A 56-year-old man died from a rare brain-swelling rabies after being bitten by a monkey, according to health officials. The State Department of Health in Brazil revealed the man was bitten by a marmoset in the rural area of Piripiri on July 15. However, the victim only sought out the Chagas Rodrigues Regional Hospital, in Piripiri, on August 12, when his condition started to deteriorate. He was transferred to a hospital in the state capital of Teresina and the patient was hospitalised with encephalitis (inflammation of the brain), caused by the rabies virus.

Tragically, he died on August 27 at the Natan Portella Institute of Tropical Diseases ,in Teresina. The State Department of Health in Brazil revealed the man was bitten by a marmoset  in the rural area of Piripiri.

“Samples from the patient were collected and sent to the Piauí Central Laboratory (Lacen), which forwarded the material to the Pasteur Institute in São Paulo, a reference laboratory for rabies tests, in accordance with the protocol established by the Ministry of Health,” health officials said in a statement.

According to local media G1, cases of rabies were last seen in the state of Piaui over a decade ago in 2013. Following a request from Brazil’s Ministry of Health, officials in Piripiri were asked to conduct a survey of the vaccination of dogs and cats in the region.
