The gas tanker exploded near a bus terminal.

Photos and video clips from the incident showed a huge smoke engulfing the area at around noon.

Some residents were seen being evacuated from the scene.

The midday incident prompted emergency service providers to rush to the scene.

They mobilized those living near them to evacuate them for their safety.

The cause of the incident is yet to be known.

Police said they were yet to establish if the driver of the lorry was safe.

Nairobi police boss Adamson Bungei said their main agenda was to evacuate the area.

He said they blocked traffic flow on the road as he urged motorists to seek alternative routes.
