The Speaker who had just communicated President William Ruto’s decision to nominate Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki as Kenya’s next deputy president ordered the lawmaker dressed in a long sleeved shirt to leave the chambers.

“Hon Shinali, will you be upstanding, you are not properly dressed, go and dress in a proper manner and come back”, the Speaker ordered the Member of Parliament.

Trying to argue that the dress code was appropriate, the MP argued that another of his colleagues was also not well dressed but his appeal was quickly shut down.

The Speaker however defended the other lawmaker stating that he was appropriately dressed since he was wearing a Kanzu, which Parliament recognizes as religious attire Muslim legislators wear on Fridays.

“Ehemu is a Muslim and he is wearing a Friday prayer outfit, there is no problem”, Wetangula said.

In November 2023, Wetangula revised the rules guiding acceptable dressing code, putting an end to some outfits the MPs loved to adorn.

Among the attires Wetangula banned in his ruling were Kaunda suits for men, and tight and revealing clothes for female lawmakers.

While in Parliament, male MPs are required to wear a coat, collar, tie, long-sleeved shirt, long trousers, socks, and shoes. Service uniform and religious attire are also accepted.

Ladies on the other hand are required to wear business, formal, or smart casual wear. The rules prescribe that skirts and dresses should be below knee-length and decent. Sleeveless blouses are prohibited.

The Speaker, based on Parliamentary code is expected to enforce the dress code rules strictly.

On Friday, MPs were in Parliament for a special sitting after the Senate voted to kick out Rigathi Gachagua as Deputy President on Thursday.

Wetangula during the session communicated that President Ruto had nominated Interior CS Kithure Kindiki as Kenya’s next deputy president.

“I have a message from the President on the nomination of Prof. Kithure Kindiki EGH. to fill the vacancy in the Office of the Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya,” Wetangula informed the house…CLICK HERE TO READ MORE ARTICLES>>>
