The impeachment case against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua continued to unfold on Thursday, October 17, with his lawyers engaging in rigorous cross-examination of witnesses from the National Assembly. However, the proceedings took a contentious turn when Kajiado Senator Seki Lenku Ole Kanar expressed dissatisfaction with the hearing process. Senator Seki accused Senate Speaker Amason Kingi of bias while a witness addressed concerns raised by other senators.

“I have a representation of Kajiado county. I have the right to speak to this assembly. The process seems to be biased,” the senator claimed. Speaker Kingi demanded an apology from Seki for what he deemed disrespectful remarks, warning that failure to comply would result in the senator’s removal from the session.

Kingi asserted that he was conducting the process fairly and rejected the accusations of bias. “Seki, you are out of order, and I am asking you to leave the chamber immediately. You cannot direct the chair on what to do. Unless you apologise, I am going to throw you out. You cannot say the chair is biased. If you noticed, we have been going on lots. The witness answers and we go to another,” said the speaker.

The ensuing chaos prompted a pause in the impeachment hearing as other senators intervened to restore order. Following their mediation, Seki issued an apology, allowing the proceedings to resume.

“I apologise,” he stated.

Lawyer Elisha Ongoya’s sharp wit and preparedness were evident as he took on Mutuse, who had moved the impeachment motion against Gachagua.
