Sinwar, who is the head of Hamas in Gaza and the second most powerful figure in the governing authority of the enclave, is believed to be based in a Hamas command center beneath a hospital in the Gaza Strip, although the hospital denies this.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has described Sinwar as a ‘little Hitler in his bunker’ with no regard for his people.
Lt. Col. Richard Hecht, a spokesperson for the Israel Defense Forces, drew parallels between Sinwar and Osama Bin Laden, stating that Sinwar is the mastermind behind the attacks, much like Bin Laden was with 9/11.
Yahya Sinwar oversees Hamas’ operations in Gaza, including the establishment of its intelligence services and military wing, the IQB. The IDF has announced its intention to search for Sinwar and other top Hamas officials.
Sinwar was previously sentenced to 426 years in prison for the killings of two Israeli soldiers in 1989 but was later released as part of a prisoner exchange with Hamas in 2011. Israel alleges that Sinwar and others released in the swap were involved in the October 7 attack.
The ongoing conflict has resulted in a significant number of casualties, with more than 9,700 Palestinians, including over 4,000 children and minors, killed in Gaza since the outbreak of the conflict on October 7.
In the occupied West Bank, more than 140 Palestinians have been killed in violence and Israeli raids.
