Violet Mukabana said she was shocked when she found out she was HIV positive, months after giving birth for her boyfriend she met at a club.

They were working together, and their working relationship escalated to a romantic one. Within two months of dating, she was pregnant.

Mukabana noted that when she was two months pregnant, her boyfriend took her to his home village, where she also found out he had been married for six years and had two kids.

“At four months, I began attending a local hospital’s clinic. The reports said everything was fine, including my height, weight, and blood pressure. Nothing was alarming. I remained there until the eighth month of pregnancy and returned to Nairobi because I wanted my child to be born in town,” she said with a smile.

The business lady said the delivery went well, and she gave birth to a healthy and bouncy baby girl.

However, their stay in Nairobi was short-lived as her married boyfriend returned them to his home village.

“We were always taken back whenever we returned to Nairobi. It was a back-and-forth thing. One time, I was quite sick and headed to another dispensary. The line was long, and when I saw there was a VCT centre, I visited it, hoping by the time I was done, the line would be shorter.

I was confident of my status, but I was shocked when the results came positive. I was advised to take the test with my lover to confirm the tests,” she said.

Her efforts to convince her husband bore fruit after several days, as he had vehemently refused to take the test.

When they took the test, the results came positive, and Mukabana said her lover did not utter a word.

“He did not say anything. He was silent all along. He only told me not to disclose the report to anyone. No one in the family knew about his status, and it hurt that I could not share the message with anyone. I did not have a relative or friend with whom to share this burden. The worst thing was that I could not breastfeed my child,” she agonisingly disclosed.
