But that day turned out to be a bad day for marathoner Eliud Kipchoge, who was accused of having a hand in the death of Kiptum.

An autopsy revealed that Kiptum, died from severe head injuries sustained in a car crash.

The athlete’s life was cut short in a late-night accident near his home in north-western Kenya on 11 February, in which his Rwandan coach, Gervais Hakizimana, also died.

In an interview with NTV, Kipchoge shared how he learned about Kiptum’s death.

“It was bad, I mourned Kiptum for only 15 minutes. I was in training with 4 of my boys when I heard Kiptum had died, I was shocked. I went in took a shower and dressed up before taking my phone. Immediately I took the phone, instead of mourning Kiptum I read people saying that I killed him.”

How did he feel about the allegations?

“They threatened to harm my family, burn my house and the camp where I was training. I go for training at 6 o’clock I do not have bodyguards it is easy to kill me. However, it is life, and in life, 97% of people are negative thinkers.”

How does he handle negativity?

The insinuations that Kipchoge was allegedly involved in Kiptums death came after the latter displaced Kipchoge after winning. In October 8, 2023, when Kelvin Kiptum stunned the world by smashing Kipchoge’s record.
