In what was an ill-tempered game, Lahoz netted 17 mouth-watering yellow cards, with Dutch defender Denzel Dumfries also receiving his marching orders despite the match already being over.

Messi, the scorer of Argentina’s second goal of the match, expressed his complaints about the referee’s performance. He told TyC Sports: “This match should not have ended like this.

“I don’t want to talk about the referee because they penalize you.

But people saw what happened. We were afraid of the match because we knew what it was like and I think FIFA should review it. You can’t use a referee like him for these games.”

it is revealed that Lahoz’s performance marks the end of his World Cup campaign. The 45-year-old will not oversee any more matches at the tournament and is expected to return to Spain.
