In the first few minutes of the game, Liverpool appeared to be highly dangerous as they controlled possession and produced a few solid chances. However, their dominance paid off in the 17th minute when Salah scored with a spectacular close-range strike.
The offensive performance of Ajax improved after they fell behind in the 17th minute. In the 27th minute, Kudus scored for the opposition with a beautiful curling drive from close range.
Towards the end of the first half, Liverpool came close to regaining the lead, but Salah’s shot was superbly stopped by the Ajax goalkeeper.
In the second half, Jurgen Klopp made a few wise tactical substitutions. In the second 45 minutes, only one of those choices turned out to be profitable.
In order to change the attacking structure of his squad, the German manager substituted Nunez for Jota in the 75th minute. Liverpool managed to score two minutes before the end of regular-season play to secure all three points.
Though, it was Matip who managed to clinch all three points for Liverpool with his last minute goal. However, Thiago Alcantara was officially named as the best player in the game.
The Spanish midfielder completed more passes than any other player on the pitch. Apart from his insightful passes in the game, Thiago also managed to create three chances, recovered the ball on four different occasions, and completed four dribbles.
