Senate Investigates The Death Of A Child Who Choked On A Seed But Doctors Removed Her Teeth

The minor’s mother petitions the Senate for redress, claiming that the child’s death has caused her pain, loss, and damages. She also complains about how rude the doctors at the health facility are.

The patient’s respiratory problems persisted despite the absence of the seed in the MTRH report.

Annita underwent a CT scan on January 19 after a failed gastrogafin study, which revealed a foreign object in her right bronchi.

The doctors told her during her surgery that there was no seed in her body; rather, a tooth was stuck in her right lung.

“When Dr. Ernest Nshom received Annita in the theatre recovery room, he stated that despite what Annita and her mother had stated, they had discovered a tooth. He went on to say that he had also removed two upper incisors from Annita’s mouth in the theatre, which Dr. Ernest had determined were loose in the child’s mouth. As a result, Annita now has two new teeth missing from the operation, Mercy claims.

The bereaved mother claimed that they could only see the two teeth that were extracted from the child’s mouth, but they did not claim that any teeth were lodged in her lung.

Mercy claims that one Dr. Alfred Wanyonyi advised them not to inquire further and to appreciate the doctors’ actions.

She goes on to say, “The doctor continued threatening us that if we continue to ask questions that he will even charge us for the teeth extraction,” noting that the child continued to cough, have a fever, and have trouble breathing.

In May 2021, the child coughed and fainted, was rushed to MTRH, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

A seed on Annita’s right bronchi and severely damaged lung were discovered during her autopsy.

According to the family, they later met with MTRH management, and the doctors admitted that they only removed two teeth, not three, as stated earlier.
