9) Matthijs De ligt (Juventus/Netherlands)

De ligt has struggled at Juventus, with injuries and poor form generating worries about his future. On the other hand, De ligt is having the best season of his career since joining the Italian club this season.

8) Niklas Sule (Bayern Munich/Germany)

Bayern Munich’s new-look defense has been led by Niklas Sule, who has had a tremendous season. The tall defender will be free to join archrivals Borussia Dortmund next season, which is a shame.

7) Milan Skriniar (Inter Milan/Slovakia)

Inter Milan’s Milan Skriniar has had another productive season. The Slovakian centre back has been a regular for Milan’s blue team as they aim to win Serie A for the second consecutive season.

6) Marquinhos (PSG/Brazil)

Marquinhos was also a part of PSG’s UCL round of 16 loss to Real Madrid last season. Apart from that, the Brazilian defender has enjoyed a productive season.

5) Eder Militao (Real Madrid/Brazil)

Eder Militao has grown progressively to become Spain’s best defender. The Brazilian has had to step up to the plate since the departures of Raphael Varane and Sergio Ramos, and he has done so wonderfully.

4) Antonio Rudiger (Chelsea/ Germany)

The fourth player on our list is Antonio Rudiger, who has been a rock for Chelsea this season. The German defender will be difficult to replace when he departs the Stamford Bridge stadium at the end of the current season.

3) Ruben Dias (Manchester City/Portugal)

After a wonderful debut season, Ruben Dias has had a good year at Manchester City.

Manchester City squandered a nine-point lead at the top of the Premier League table while the Portuguese defender was absent, demonstrating his importance to Pep Guardiola’s side.

2) Thiago Silva (Chelsea/Brazil)

Thiago Silva, a 38-year-old Brazilian defender, comes in second on our list. Age is just a number to him.

After an injury-plagued season last season, Virgil Van Dijk has rediscovered his form for Liverpool this season.

The Dutchman has ascended to the top of our ranking of the world’s best defenders, and it will take something extraordinary to knock him off his perch.
