The Senate through its Committee on Sports and Youth Development had sought an increase the daily feeding allowance of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members from its current N600 per person to N1,000.

The Chairman of the Committee Senate Committee, Senator Obinna Ogba made the appeal while presenting his panel report on the 2022 budget to the Appropriations Committee.

Senator Ogba said it was appalling that the prisoners’ ratio was going to be higher than the NYSC members, who are serving the nation.

He said, “It’s appalling that prisoners who have committed crimes are going to enjoy more than the youth corps members who are serving the country”.

Finally, Senate Moves To Increase The Allowance Of NYSC Corps Members
“The prisoners should not be taking more than the youth corps members, because the feeding allowance for corpers is N600 per person a day while that of a prisoner is to be put at N1000 per day.

“You and I will agree that this is not the right thing. I’m only appealing to the executive and the legislature to do something about the youth corps members by increasing their daily feeding allowance from 600 to N1000 and the quality of their uniform.”

The lawmaker also lamented that the budgetary allocation to the ministry of Youths and Sports which is put at N5 billion for capital expenditure in the 2022 budget was grossly inadequate.

“Something needs to be done because the budget cannot take both the ministry and the youths anywhere,” he said.

Meanwhile, Members of the Nigerian Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters have endorsed the Dr. Nabo Graham Douglas campus of the Nigerian Law School in Port Harcourt and declared that it has come to stay.

The committee members gave the endorsement shortly after inspecting ongoing civil construction work at the campus as part of their oversight function in Port Harcourt on Tuesday.

They were conducted round the project sites by the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, first to the staff quarters beside the Hotel Presidential and then to the Law School campus at Rumueme, Port Harcourt.

Chairman of the committee, Senator Michael Opeyemi Bamidele said they are, no doubt, impressed with what they have seen in Port Harcourt. According to him, their colleagues in the Senate, including the leadership of the Senate who have invested so much trust and put them in charge of the committee are waiting to hear from them.
