Evelyn Ntoko Mase was Mandela’s first wife, but many people only became aware of this after a long time because they heard more about his second wife, Winnie Madikizela Mandela.

Evelyn was a nurse in Johannesburg and a Jehovah’s Witness, and it was through ANC member Walter Sisulu that she met Mandela. They got married in 1944 and had four children, including Makaziwe Pumla Mandela Amuah, who is still alive today.

Makaziwe was born in 1953 and is the only surviving child from Mandela’s first marriage. Sadly, two of her siblings died at young ages, and the other died as a baby. Evelyn is said to have paid for Mandela’s education so he could become a lawyer. In 1958, they divorced, and Mandela later married Winnie in 1960.
