One could hear his music everywhere across the world – in every bars, cabs, and radio stations. It is arguable that every kid knows his name and enjoys his music!
Lucky like many other African children had to work to support his family rather than attend school. He worked as a gardener and a library assistant in the past.
Because his mother worked a lot as a single mother, he was partly reared by his grandmother. He began to compose music while still a child. After being inspired by Peter Tosh, he released a number of “mbaqanga” albums in Zulu and Afrikaans before moving to reggae in 1984.
His record, Prisoner”, was the best selling album in South Africa during the 1980s and 1990s, and “Victims’ sold over a million copies. In Africa, the compilation “Serious Reggae Business” was a huge hit. He received over 20 honours in South Africa and abroad.
He was shot and killed in his car during an attempted carjacking on October 18, 2007 in Rosettenville, a Johannesburg suburb.
He died when he was only 43. The three assassins were arrested and sentenced to life in prison. Dube was married to Zanele Mdluli, with whom he had children, a daughter named Nkulee, a boy named Thokozani and others.
His wife, Zanele Mdluli, is still youthful and gorgeous, 14 years later, Zanele Mdluli is still playing the motherly and fatherly roles to their children. Nkule Dube is a reggae singer, just like her father.
