Because becoming a mother is a surprising and thrilling thing, some new mothers can forget to do a lot of important things after delivery. Here are seven important postpartum objectives for new moms to consider....CONTINUE READING

1. Eat enough food.

When you’re dealing with the demands of a new baby, it’s easy to skip a meal or forget to eat at all. But a lack of nourishment depletes the energy you need to keep on top of the whole parenting thing. Eating when your baby eats is a simple solution. According to Lizellen La Follette, have easy-to-make snack alternatives available so you don’t have to go to the kitchen to cook anything.

Put many double-batch dinners in your freezer so that you can pull them out when you’re too exhausted to cook or assign supper duty to your partner till further notice. If you’re breastfeeding, you should also increase your fluid consumption, La Follette added. Because nursing causes a hormonal reaction that can make you thirsty, keep a bottle of water nearby.

2. Continue to take your prenatal vitamins.

Many new moms believe that once they have a newborn, they don’t need to take prenatal vitamins anymore, according to Sherry Ross, M.D., ob/GYN at Providence Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica. That is not the case.

Your body needs more minerals and vitamins when breastfeeding than it did throughout pregnancy, she explains. To ensure that your baby gets the nutrition she requires try to talk to your OB/GYN about increasing your omega-3 fish oil and vitamin D doses.

3. Limit visits in the beginning.

Immediately after you give birth, your family and friends will be eager to see the new baby. And you don’t need to send them away. Childbirth is a challenging process for your body. It’s difficult to maintain your energy during this time, and visits can further deplete your (limited) resources. Try to have visitors to avoid loneliness and postpartum depression.

4. Get plenty of rest.

According to Ross, sleep is essential for every part of recovery, but it can become a thing of the past immediately after you have a newborn. Ross recommends sleeping when your baby sleeps.

5. Breastfeeding requires patience.

Breastfeeding might be unpleasant at first. Breastfeeding pain might be difficult to adjust to. But as you keep doing it, you will get used to it. And don’t forget to go to the hospital if the pain is getting too much.

6. Give your private part some much-needed TLC.

If you had a regular private part birth, you’re probably in a lot of pain and suffering. According to Ross, topical lidocaine is the best treatment for vaginal tears because it cures the damaged areas while ibuprofen and sitz baths reduce swelling. You can also consult your doctor for more information or treatment.\

7. Ask for help.

If you don’t take time for yourself, you’ll be useless to others, which means you’ll have to ask for help. Having someone to watch the kids for a few hours can be your only option for catching up on sleep, getting a shower, or simply being off duty for a few minutes. It’s not just about childcare when it comes to accepting help from others: Solicit assistance with washing, supper preparation, and grocery shopping. Don’t be afraid to delegate, ask for assistance frequently.
