Going to bed at night for Muslims is a special moment. A Muslim who has more knowledge about Islam tries to ensure he does all the necessary things required before he travels to dreamland.

1. Perform Ablution

Ablution is not just synonymous to the five daily prayers, Muslims are advised to perform ablution with water before going to bed at night. Prophet Muhammad advised all Muslims on ablution.

Ablution is compulsory for all Muslims whenever they want to perform prayers.

2. Dusting of bed

A Muslim should not just jump into his bed when he feels sleepy. He should dust his bed like three times after removing the bed cover clothes. Thereafter, he lays his bed and lies on it.

3. Recite selected supplications

One of the supplications the Messenger of Allaah told Muslims to say at bedtime is “Bismika Allaahumma Amutu Wa Ahya” which literally translates in English language as, “With your name Allaah, I go to sleep and I wake up.”

If a Muslim recites only this supplication without the other ones, there is no problem.

4. Recite selected portions of the Glorious Qur’an

Some selected chapters Muslims are to recite are 112, 113 and 114. Chapters 112, 113 and 114 are to be recited three times each into slight spitty palms and then rubbed all over the body three times.

In addition, verses 255, 285 and 286 of chapter 2 of the Glorious Qur’an should be recited before sleeping at night.

5. Sleep preferably on the right side

The idea behind sleeping on the right side for Muslims is to reduce pressure on the left side of the body which is closer to the heart, the blood pumping organ.

Muslims can also place their head on their right palm before sleeping off.

A blanket or any other comfortable cloth can be used to cover yourself up. Muslims are advised to cover themselves and can leave the head uncovered.

There is no problem if a Muslim covers himself from head to toe especially when there is cold.

7. Put out the light

Muslims should not sleep at night without putting out the light. Putting out light at night was mentioned by Prophet Muhammad to his companions.
