According to the Ministry of Education, they are expecting about 100, 000 teachers to register by September 30 this month.

But Ministry of Education Quality Assurance Services official Golden Msilimba said 42,075 teachers have registered so far.

Msilimba said despite the deadline being around the corner, they are still educating teachers on the importance of getting registered because some of them are in rural areas, where information takes time to reach them.

He further said the board governing the council would meet after the deadline is met to review progress of the registration exercise.

“It’s a must to register and, as long as you are a teacher, you belong to the council. We will continue with sensitisation so that they should understand why we do this,” he said.

The registration is targeting primary and secondary teachers, teachers’ training college tutors, early childhood development caregivers and administrators.

By July this year, only 4,000 teachers had registered with the council.

On his part, education activist Lexon Ndalama said the council was important because it would harmonise and sanitise the teaching profession.

“No education system is better than the quality of its own teachers,” he said.

Teachers Council of Malawi was established by the Education Act of 2013 to oversee the registration, licencing and upholding of teaching standards in Malawi.
