Journalist Discloses Newcastle’s Position On £40m Bryan Mbeumo Transfer, Paul Mitchell Expressing Two Concerns

Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo has emerged as a dream transfer target for Newcastle United.

Newcastle United are expected to be busy in the January transfer window after failing to land any of their top targets in the summer.

Despite pushing hard to sign Marc Guehi in the summer, Newcastle have shelved plans to strengthen at centre-back and a new right winger is now the transfer priority.

According to reports, Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo is Newcastle’s “dream” target after his impressive run of form for the Bees this season.

The 25-year-old has scored eight goals in 12 games for Brentford in 2024/25, but Newcastle face competition for his signature with Mbeumo also on Liverpool and Arsenal’s radar.

Newcastle fans are in favour of signing Mbeumo in January, but he will not be cheap and Newcastle continue to be hamstrung by Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules.

How Newcastle United feel about signing Bryan Mbeumo in January

After failing to improve their starting XI over the summer transfer window, there is a growing urgency for Newcastle to get deals over the line in January.

However, it seems there are a few concerns about Mbeumo that could make a January deal difficult.

According to Chris Waugh at The Athletic, a move for Mbeumo in January should not be ruled out but it “seems a stretch”.

He claims Brentford are hard sellers and expects a fee of “£40million-plus” for the winger.

Waugh then added that there are two factors that could potentially concern sporting director Paul Mitchell.

“At 25, he is slightly older than the kind of player Paul Mitchell would ideally recruit,” he said.

“It would also represent a continuation of Premier League-based players being signed more often than not and, while Newcastle intend to keep recruiting domestically, Mitchell’s stated goal is to widen the pool.”

Newcastle United should go all-in for Bryan Mbeumo

Newcastle are in desperate need of a right-sided winger and Mbeumo ticks all the boxes.

He is still young at 25, has bags of Premier League experience and is a direct improvement on Newcastle’s current options out wide.

Anthony Gordon starred on the right against Arsenal on Saturday but has admitted his favourite position is on the left wing.

The same can be said of Harvey Barnes, who has been competing with Gordon for a spot on the left this season.

Miguel Almiron has been linked with an exit from Newcastle and will likely need replacing – Newcastle can secure a huge upgrade if they can lure Mbuemo to Tyneside.
