Civil servants and other public service employees now want a separate and more advanced cover than the normal SHIF cover.
MPs have questioned the legality of the governmentโs extension of the Sh6.7 billion comprehensive medical insurance cover for civil servants, saying it violates the Social Health Insurance Act (SHI) Act.
The Public Service Principal Secretary, Amos Gathecha, sent a letter on October 9, 2024, announcing the extension of the cover to November 21, 2024, and later rolling it out as a managed fund outside of the SHI Act, which is the source of the MPsโ concerns.
Yesterday, MPs Anthony Kibagendi (Kitutu Chache South) and Jessica Mbalu (Kibwezi East) warned that the extension of the cover is akin to reintroducing the repealed National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) through the backdoor.
