Senior Economic Advisor Moses Kuria has called on the Mt Kenya politicians and residents to coexist harmoniously with other communities insisting this is the only route to ensuring the region remains well represented in government heading into the future.
Speaking at a funeral in Kirinyaga County on Friday, the former Public Service Cabinet Secretary while appearing to throw a subtle jab at Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua warned that the region risks being isolated by the rest of the country if it subscribes to seclusionist politics.
โIn Parliament, you have even seen how MPs voted. In the scenario Mt Kenya MPs go it alone without working with other communities, that wonโt be enough to compete with the rest of Kenya,โ Kuria remarked.
Kuria also cautioned Mt Kenya leaders against pursuing selfish personal ambitions cautioning that this would be counterproductive.
โOur leaders should emphasize crafting winning formulas and not wasting time on strategies that are doomed to fail. As leaders, we are drivers of buses, which have some people hanging,โ said Moses Kuria.
โWe should not be selfish and do things just to benefit us. We should be careful and not make the same mistakes we have made in the past,โ Kuria added.
Moses Kuriaโs sentiments come against the backdrop of division in the Mt Kenya region stemming from the push to impeach Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
The move has sparked outrage among a section of Mt Kenya leaders who have threatened to break away from the ruling Kenya Kwanza coalition if the deputy president is ousted.
Gachagua had been accused of propagating ethnic politics through his continuous push for Mt Kenya region unity. In the impeachment motion, Gachagua was accused of fanning ethic tensions against the countryโs best interests.
Even as the plot to impeach him gains momentum, the second in command has insisted that he would face his accusers head on and defend himself to the end, further dismissing claims of contemplating resigning from his job. โI have no intention of resigning from this job. I will battle until the end,โ Gachagua said in a recent presser.
He further claimedย that the plot to hound him out of office was politically orchestrated and had nothing to do with the violation of the Constitution as alleged in the impeachment motion.
To unseat the deputy president, two-thirds of the members of the Senate will have to vote in favour of his removal.
