Gachagua, during his media briefing on Monday evening, October 7, at his Karen residence, linked his proposed ouster toย Rutoย and accused the president of betrayal.
He suggested that the president had used him and, therefore, sought to dump him through impeachment. But speaking to NTV, Ichung’wah said the deputy president lied.
According to the vocal parliamentarian, the role of oversight on the executive is reserved for the National Assembly, and therefore, a process like impeachment should not be seen as a shocker.
He said Gachagua’s impeachment is parliament’s self-initiative, which the president has nothing to do with. “MPs do not need the permission of President William Ruto or indeed anybody in the Executive to impeachment anybody. We simpoly exercise our oversight mandate in accordance with the constitution,” said Ichung’wah.
Before the impeachment motion, Gachagua argued that such grave issues as his ouster must be a brainchild of the head of state.
According to him, as per the structure of the current regime, contentious legislation and issues with serious implications for the country must be canvassed in a Parliamentary Group (PG) meeting convened by Ruto before the matter is taken to parliament.
He added that in the event the motion is tabled in the National Assembly, the president will still be the one to push it to fruition. In an appeal to the president, Gachagua reminded him of the vow he made when they got into office after the 2022 vote.
He recalled that Ruto promised not to allow denigration on him (Gachagua), as was the case during former president Uhuru Kenyatta’s tenure when the current president was humiliated.
