Shock As Retired Athlete Samson Kandie Is Hacked To Death Adjacent To His Toilet

According to Uasin Gishu police chief Benjamin Mwanthi, the runner was hacked to death within his compound at the high-end Elgon View estate.

Mwathi said the Athlete was attacked by people who appear to have been waiting for him at the home and police are investigating the incident.

He stated that the perpetrators fled with his phone, but nothing else was taken from the runner during the Thursday night event, which caused shock and alarm in the region.

“We are looking for the suspects involved so that we bring them to book,” Mwanthi reported.

According to authorities, the 53-year-old runner, who won the 2002 Sapporo and 2004 Vienna marathons, was found badly battered with his hands and legs tied up.

Kandie, a retired and low-profile runner, prior to the incident reported no threats to his life.

His daughter, Vienna Kandie, stated that her father called and said he was on his way home but didn’t show up.

Later, a stranger called told the wife to look for Kandie behind the toilet where the body was found.

He was found in critical condition and died on arrival at a hospital in the city.

Kandie finished on the podium at the 1999 Berlin Marathon, with a personal best time of 2:08:31.

Athletes in the region, led by Ezekiel Kemboi, have expressed dismay at Kandie’s death and urged the government to improve security for runners.
