Ranging from both the Azimio la Umoja and Kenya Kwanza coalition, the majority of the lawmakers stood in unison to sign the motion, claiming that he has grossly violated the Constitution multiple times throughout the past two years.
The 291 MPs in support of the motion surpassed the threshold of 117 members required to table the motion.
However, some 54 legislators had a different view over the matter, opting not to sign the ouster bid.
Embakasi East’s Babu Owino was among the MPs who chose to watch from a distance as he did not append his signature despite the majority of opposition MPs backing the motion.
On his part, Nyali MP Mohammed Ali condemned the impeachment bid, citing that it serves a political witch-hunt against the Second in Command.
“I have carefully read the charges in the impeachment motion against Deputy President Rigathi. In good faith, I do not support this cause of action and find it ill- intentioned seeking to demonize a Public Servant who has contributed immensely to this great country,” Ali said.
“Let it be known that I, Mohamed Ali Mohamed, did not sign the impeachment motion against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. God bless Kenya,” he added.
Marakwet West MP Timothy Kipchumba Toroitich also joined the fray, calling for Speaker Moses Wetangula and Deputy Speaker to recuse themselves over their past remarks which showed a bias that could jeopardise the hearing.
He also questioned the motive behind Gachagua’s impeachment at a time when the ruling party ought to be implementing their manifesto.
“My conscience is against the letter, the spirit and the intent of the impeachment motion against the Deputy President. Let history record that I, Timothy Kipchumba Toroitich, NEVER supported the impeachment of the Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. God bless Kenya,” he stated.
“In regards to the planned impeachment of the Deputy President H.E. Rigathi Gachagua, EGH; This is to categorically state that in the event Members of Parliament have to vote, I have keenly listened to the ground and I will NOT vote Yes to the motion. I will vote No,” she pointed out.
A surprising name that was not on the list was Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro, often viewed as President William Ruto’s blue-eyed boy, who has had past run-ins with Gachagua over the battle for Mt Kenya supremacy.
Other lawmakers from the Mt Kenya region such as Edward Muriu (Gatanga), Mary Maua (Maragua), Peter Kihungi (Kangema), Joseph Munyoro (Kigumo), Chege Njuguna (Kandara) have also stood with the “truthful man”, terming it as a plot to weaken his influence ahead of the 2027 elections…CLICK HERE TO READ MORE ARTICLES>>>
