Parliament Pauses Sessions For The Following Reasons

Seth Olale of Citizen TV discusses the news, stating, “Parliament has suspended Thursday’s sitting to allow for administrative preparations for public participation on Friday regarding the impeachment motion against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.” Mwengi Mutuse, the MP for Kibwezi West, has made the motion, and it will be taken to the 47 counties to get feedback from the people. Speaker Moses Wetangula confirmed that the motion would be debated on Tuesday of next week and emphasized the significance of public participation in such matters.[…]CLICK HERE TO READ THE FULL ARTICLEβ–Ά

On Wednesday, the House will meet briefly to discuss ways to make it easier for the public to participate. Wetangula, the speaker, also said that Gachagua has the right to defend himself in person or with the help of a lawyer. “It would be absurd for any motion to be concluded without public participation,” he added. For such removals, public participation is essential.”

Over ten violations, including Constitutional violations, corruption, and incitement, are alleged in Mutuse’s motion against Gachagua. Also, he said, Gachagua had failed as Deputy President, especially when it came to collective Cabinet responsibility. The 291 lawmakers on Mutuse’s list who signed on to support the motion were more than the 117 signatures required by the Constitution for the impeachment to proceed. Wetangula confirmed that the motion met all requirements.

Mutuse made it clear that the motion is not an attack on Gachagua personally but rather a necessary action to uphold the integrity of public office during a session of Parliament. “I hold no malice or personal vengeance against the Deputy President,” he stated. I am merely performing my civic and political responsibilities.

The motion lists nine specific charges against Gachagua, including promoting ethnic discrimination, making divisive public statements that threaten national unity, and gross constitutional violations. Additionally, he is accused of engaging in corruption, money laundering, and abuse of office, all of which would undermine public trust and go against the policies of the government. Mutuse claimed that he had nine witnesses prepared to provide evidence for each accusation in support of the motion. He added, “We believe it is necessary to remove him for the sake of Kenyans” if Gachagua prevents people from receiving services.

The impeachment process comes at a time when tensions between President Ruto and Gachagua are getting worse. Gachagua insists that he has not broken any laws, despite recent reports that he is ready for the impeachment hearings. The motion against him has significant political support despite his defense.

The final hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, with public participation on Friday. Gachagua’s continued status as Deputy President or removal from office will be determined by the outcome…CLICK HERE TO READ MORE ARTICLES>>>
