The chimpanzee took the infant into the forest, where the child’s mutilated body was later found 3 km from the Nimba Mountains Nature Reserve.
Eye Witnesses believe the chimp used tools to disembowel the baby, raising fears of increasing violence from the animals.
Chief researcher Gen Yamakoshi, who has studied the chimpanzees in the area for decades, suggested the killing may have occurred because the chimpanzees “no longer fear humans.”
The once-peaceful relationship between the animals and the local community has now turned hostile, with locals blaming researchers for the tragedy.
Enraged villagers stormed the Bossou Environmental Research Institute, destroying equipment and setting fire to the building in protest.
Ecologist Alidjiou Sylla pointed to a dwindling food supply in the chimpanzees’ reserve, which has driven the animals into human territories more frequently.
The research center has recorded six chimpanzee attacks on humans this year alone.
Youth leader Moussa Koya noted that the chimps’ aggressive behavior has become more common, though researchers are still uncertain whether it’s driven by hunger or “excitement.”
