The Red Devils surrendered their first-half lead and started their European campaign with a frustrating draw.

After Erik ten Hag lashed out over the Marcus Rashford claims this week, the Dutchman handed him his spot back in the starting lineup against Twente.

Alejandro Garnacho was the man to miss out, with Amad Diallo preferred on the right-hand side.

Christian Eriksen continued his superb run of form with his third goal in four games, but the Dane then made a mistake that handed Twente an equaliser scored by Sam Lammers.

Garnacho had come on as a substitute just moments before Twente’s goal and Erik ten Hag was overheard repeating a one-word message in his instructions.

Garnacho has been enjoying a breakout season at Old Trafford with four goals and three assists in seven games.

However, he has often had to perform his magic off the bench and that was the case once again on Wednesday evening’s Europa League clash.

Garnacho has arguably been United’s brightest player going forward this season, but Owen Hargreaves overheard Ten Hag instructing him to defend.

Speaking on TNT Sports [9:23pm], Hargreaves said: “Yeah we’re being a bit nosey here, we’re a bit too close to the bench.

“Garnacho, obviously he wants to come on and attack but Ten Hag said to him ‘defend, defend, defend’.

“That’s what he demands from these players, they’re 1-0 up and they want to create the attacking players but they still have to defend too.”

However, Ten Hag’s instructions did not age well with Twente scoring an equaliser just moments after Garnacho entered the pitch.

United’s skilful winger was eventually freed up to attack and push forward, but United were unable to find a winner.

Garnacho has been one of Ten Hag’s biggest success stories during his time as United boss.

The Argentine is an extremely exciting prospect and appears to be getting better and better under the Dutchman. This season he is beginning to emulate Cristiano Ronaldo.

Garnacho’s attacking talent is blindingly clear but Ten Hag also demands that all of his players help to defend and press from the front – it is clear that the United boss was drilling that message through before Garnacho came off the bench.
