Barasa claims to have secured 242 signatures from lawmakers, surpassing the 177 required for National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula to approve the motion. He intends to submit the signatures later today, aiming for the motion to be debated next Tuesday.
Barasa, a close ally of President William Ruto, expressed confidence in his support across party lines.
“I am the sponsor of the impeachment motion against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. So far, I have received 242 signatures, and six more MPs are prepared to sign,” Barasa stated during a phone interview.
Under Article 150, the Kenyan Constitution allows for the impeachment of a Deputy President for gross constitutional violations, suspected criminal conduct, or gross misconduct.
Barasa emphasized his determination to push the motion forward: “I will present the motion on the House floor. By the end of today, I will have submitted the signatures to the Speakerβs office.”
Lawmakers from the western caucus have also united on this matter, holding a Kamukunji meeting to discuss Gachaguaβs impeachment.
An anonymous MP confirmed the decision: “The agreement has been reached, and we now await the motion’s tabling next week.”
