NACADA Is Concerned About Social Media’s Marketing Of Substances And Drugs

The authority warned that such posts by content creators and which are often directed at young audiences, pose significant threat to their fight against alcohol and drug abuse, while undermining the efforts to protect vulnerable groups, especially children, from these harmful influences.

The authority further implored them to desist from using their platforms to glorify drug use, warning that such acts through social media were not only irresponsible but is also a violation of the law.

“Under the Alcoholic Drinks Control Act, 2010 (ADCA) and the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Control Act, 1994, promoting, advertising, or encouraging drug use is illegal and punishable by law,” the Authority said yesterday.

NACADA has encouraged parents and guardians to closely monitor the content their children are exposed to online, particularly on social media platforms, which often lack adequate safeguards.

Also, in the war against the use of drugs and substances and drug trafficking, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has tightened its noose on traffickers, cracking down their dens across the country and rounding up tons of hard drugs including bhang, cocaine, heroin and other drugs.

On Monday, law enforcement officers from Piny Oyie Police Station in Suna West Sub-County seized over 500kg of cannabis as the suspect managed to escape.

During a routine patrol on the Kopanga-Mubachi road, the officers spotted a vehicle loaded with illegal goods. Upon noticing the officers, the driver attempted to flee, igniting a high-speed chase.

The pursuit ended when the driver lost control, veered off the road, and abandoned the vehicle, escaping on foot.

Upon searching the vehicle, the police discovered the drugs, packed to the brim. The vehicle was then taken to the police station for safe custody as exhibits. Also recovered inside the vehicle was a motor vehicle number plate.

In another case, a team of DCI detectives based in Mombasa and Diani arrested two notorious drug traffickers, seizing Marijuana worth over Sh9 million.

Following a crucial tip-off, detectives drawn from the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) Mombasa and DCI Diani arrested Hamisi Omar who later led them to a nearby drug store where they uncovered 10 sacks of

Marijuana weighing 314 kg with an approximate street value of Sh9, 421, 500.

The pursuit then led to the arrest of the main suspect, Irene Auma, aged 30 years in a nearby house.

In a similar operation at Luore Shopping Centre in Rusinga West location, another team of officers raided a suspected illicit drug den, seizing sacks of unrolled bhang with a street value of Sh1.7 million…CLICK HERE TO READ MORE ARTICLES>>>
